MOSES SUMNEY AND SO I COME TO ISOLATION

Experimental genre binder Moses Sumney's magnificent double album græ arrived in full on the 15th May following a scatter of singles that paved the way. The new album is cinematic and bold in all the right quantities; it's an amalgamation of genres, using everything from synthesisers, brass, strings and jazz piano to spoken word and acoustic guitar, not to mention Sumney's soul stirring vocals that leave you with goosebump-covered arms. The Californian Ghanaian once told The Guardian that he has "an almost obnoxious obsession with loneliness, singledom, isolation…", which makes perfect sense after hearing græ, and in particular the track 'and so I come to isolation' which recently landed alongside a lyric video. Sounds are played in reverse to open the track, like a spaceship in flight that lands on planet earth, greeting a curious bass line and mysterious strings. With freaky relevance to all our lives at present, a narrator tells an engaging story surrounding the linguistics of the word 'isolation'. 'and so I come to isolation' weaves story and song into a beautifully executed, thought-provoking piece. -Ellie Rose-Davies
